Collaborative companies you have:

·      Contrinex

·      Mitsui Seiki

·      Wild Republic

·      Trans Tech

1. Imagine, that you are setting up your own company, the 5th company. Document in about 1 page the following: What is the new green quality-focused product / process / service your company plans to develop?

5th company: Reuse and Recycle Pvt. Ltd.

RNR will work on recycling the waste metals, plastic and scrap given out by the 4 collaborating companies. The objective of the company is use the waste products given from these companies and reuse and recycle them. The reused and recycled materials can used in these companies as well as can be sent to other companies. Reusing them we can make useful products of out of them.

By recycling the wastes we are lessening the burden on earth. We are extracting the metals from the earth on a very high intensity. Thus the use of recycled and reused metals will lessen the burden of extracting metals up to a certain extent. On the other hand plastic is very difficult to dispose. Reusing and recycling plastic will solve many of the disposal issues. The recycled plastic can be used in packaging and many other ways like reusing it in the production line itself.

The 4 collaborating companies include 3 which use metals and 1 which uses plastic. So this 5th company will collaborate in an efficient manner thus solving many issues of recycling, reusing and disposal of the waste and scrap produced from these companies.

The recycled metals can be sent to these 3 companies for reuse as well as other companies which are using these metals. The plastic recycled can be sent to any of the 4 companies because it will be used for basic purposes like packaging.

Thus forming this company will act as a boon to all the 4 companies. This company will have a Sustainable Green Focus as well. It aims at recycling and reusing the waste materials given out by these companies. Thus it reduces the burden on the earth as the waste is recycled and it is not disposed.

The 4 Collaborative companies

2. Document in a few (8-10) sentences: What will your company work on, and how will it collaborate with the other 4 companies?

The main aim of RNR is to reduce the wastes produced by the companies and put it to good use. Basically it makes the best out of the waste. It aims at reducing the dumping of the wastes and rather putting it to use. The company will collect wastes from each of the 4 companies and find ways to reuse and recycle it. These recycled materials can be reused again in the same companies or else can be sent to other companies which use them as raw materials.

The 3 companies namely Contrinex, Mitsui Seiki and Trans Tech produce a lot of scrap and waste metal like stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloys and many more metals. So these metals can be recycled using the 5th company. The recycled metals can be in turn used in the companies itself. The leftover can be converted in to useful articles for sale. The other recycled metal which is left can also be used as raw material to other industries using those metals. Contrinex and Trans Tech mainly use stainless steel for its production. Mitsui Seiki uses titanium and nickel alloys. Stainless steel can be recycled and used back in these industries. The stainless steel which is of a bit low grade can also be used in other industries like producing utensils. Titanium is a very expensive metal. Reusing this metal will help the company a lot in reducing its raw material costs. Thus it is beneficial for all the companies. Wild Republic produces waste in the form of plastic and cloth and some amount of metals. All these materials can be used making something useful or recycled and used in some other form. Thus RNR helps all the companies in some form or the other. Most importantly it is helping mankind by reducing the load of excavation of metals from earth and reducing the dumping of waste.

3. Describe all above with a TQM and a Sustainable Green focus. You can find good ideas for these if you read the first two Chapters of the TQM eBook. There is a section on the dimensions attributes of quality. Try to address the dimensions of quality in your collaborative 4+1 company network.

RNR Pvt. Ltd. addresses to all the dimensions of quality. It has a good brand name quality. It delivers what it promises to do. It does not back out while providing anything to the customer. The features that the product produced from this company are that they are all recycled. No new materials are used to make these products. The scrap and the waste materials given out by these 4 companies is used to make the materials. The performance of the company is very high. The company is very reliable. It delivers what it has promised to the customer. The products produced are reliable as well. The durability of the products is high as well. The products are made through proper processing. So there is minimal chance of it not being of good quality. The serviceability of the company is very high. As these are recycled products it can be serviced very easily without many problems. Aesthetics and excitement quality of the products are high as well. The product is made as attractive as possible. Safety is taken in to consideration in the very beginning. All the processes used to produce are very safe. It also conforms to standards of ISO 9001:2008. It also conforms to green standards. The name itself justifies it as it is reuse and recycles. It produces products from waste and scrap. Thus it addresses all dimensions of quality.

4. Also address each of the eight ISO9001:2008 quality principles. These can trigger good ideas to innovate! You can read about all this in the TQM eBook. Take each principle from the eBook Chapter and address it how you will deal with it in your (i.e. in the 5th) company? Don’t forget the TQM focus! You have to spell out the TQM focus and Sustainable Green Quality aspects of your company! (Many students forget this!) The Eight Quality Management Principles based on the revised ISO 9001:2008 series:

1.      Customer focus

Satisfaction of the customer is the main motto of any company. Each and every step in the company is taken by keeping the customer in focus. The main aim is meeting up to the customer expectations and trying to deliver more than what they have asked for. In our company our customers are the 4 companies itself and the other companies to whom the recycled plastic and metals will be supplied. This company will be always ready to service the customers for whatever they want. At RNR we will always be available for the customers 24*7.

2.      Leadership

For any company to function in an organized and efficient manner a good leader is required. This leader is the driving force of the whole company. This leader under his whole team runs the company efficiently. At RNR there is a very friendly working environment. Unity is maintained within all the employees and the leader. Goals are set for all the employees and they work in direction to it. All these qualities will help us become a leading company and excel to new horizons.

3.      Involvement of people

At RNR, each and every employee is important. The performance of each and every individual is either directly or indirectly affecting the progress of the company. In the meeting held weekly all the employees get a say. They can put forward their ideas and it is considered open mindedly. This allows the employees to be innovative and prove their talent. At RNR all the people work together as a family.

4.      Process approach

Systematic approach is carried out in each and every process done in the company. This helps us to reduce errors and thus increase productivity. Before performing a process it is documented and all the hazards are taken into account. A lot of testing is also done so that the test does not fail and does not cause damage to life and property. Main aim of the company is quality so each and every process is carried out with minute details. This will help us to use our resources efficiently and prevent wastage.

5.      Systems approach to management

Each employee has to report to the employee above him for the systems approach. Objectives will be achieved quickly using this methodology. Every employee has the power to talk to the management directly about the project. This helps in overall development of the company and also helps the employees excel.

6.      Continual improvement

Any company which wants to excel has to inculcate the quality of continual improvement. We have a special research team working on the new technologies. Thus improvement is on the card always.

7.      Factual approach to decision making

Decision making is the key to progress of an organization. One wrong decision and you go under losses and one correct decision you earn a lot. For making correct decisions collection of data is carried out. Information is then extracted from the data. This helps a lot in making correct decisions.

8.      Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

Maintaining good relations with all the companies is beneficial for our company. As our company recycles, we need scrap and waste materials from all other companies as they must be producing them in bulk. Maintaining good relations will help us grow our business well. This will also encourage recycling a lot thus reducing pollution and use of new materials again and again.

Video summary

·         AISIN Auto components

This video demonstrates AISIN Company which is based in Japan which produces all auto components. The components were showed in a wired frame car. It also manufactures car parking assist systems and many more systems which help driver drive the car easier. This company produces each and every part of a car. Thus it’s a complete package on the whole. It does not depend on any other company for any other part of the car. The car company can directly collaborate with this company and acquire all the parts.

The principle learnt from the company is quality and process approach. They had developed the parking assist system. This system used cameras for locating a spot and then parked the car automatically parallel. It can take examples from AISIN  about how they fulfill customer requirements.

·         Alt-energy-auto

This video describes the various alternative sources of energy which can be used to power cars. As the prices of fossil fuel is increasing and pollution due to them is also increasing. Thus all car companies are doing their research on alternative sources of energy. Toyota has come up with a technology like FCHV i.e. fuel cell hybrid vehicle which runs on battery as well as hydrogen. Hydrogen is emerging as a great substitute for gas for powering cars. In this car hydrogen combines with the oxygen in the air and powers the car. It also charges the battery thus becoming a hybrid car. Other technology is proton exchange membrane. This technology is used in many cars powered by hydrogen. It also demonstrated a hydrogen re-fueling station. There were many issues with the transportation of hydrogen and all the companies are trying to solve those problems.

The TQM principles learnt are customer focus, process approach, continual improvement, factual approach to decision making. Sustainable green concept is used as well as all the companies are trying to develop alternative fuel. This reduces the load on fossil fuels.

The principles which would be useful in my company are finding alternative sources of energy to power the industry. We should also reduce usage of fossil fuels and use renewable energy instead.

·         Antigua-IslandTour

This video includes the city tour of Antigua. In the beginning in the plane, the pilots were taking down some readings for further reference and to check whether the plane was working properly. The other things in the videos include plants, animals, dockyards and beautiful beaches. The city was very clean. It had a very clean eco-system. Beaches and dockyards were nicely maintained. It had very few vehicles running.  On the whole it seemed to be pollution free. There was greenery i.e. plants planted everywhere, even on the sides of the roads. The docks were maintained properly. The buildings had high water storage capacities.  The artifacts seen in the video were also maintained properly.

We can learn from this video to plant trees around the surrounding and keeping them clean and pollution free. We should also use renewable sources of energy. We should try to harvest rainwater which can solve water issues.

·         AtlanticCityAuth-Water

This video describes waste water treatment plant and renewable sources of energy like wind energy and solar energy plant. The waste water treatment plant recycles the waste water and treats it up to a point when 85 percent suspended particles are removed. Thus the water is treated and safe enough to be left in the oceans. This plant helps a lot in reducing water pollution. The other plant is a wind energy plant. Turbines are rotated with the wind and thus energy is produced. This video also describes solar panels which produce clean energy.

The TQM principles learnt is process approach. It also follows the sustainable green principle. The plant recycles the waste water given out by other industries thus reducing water pollution. The treated water is 85 free of suspended particles. This water is safe enough to be let in the oceans. Thus it helps in preventing damage to the flora and fauna in the ocean. They also produce green energy thus reducing our use of fossil fuels which in turn saves a lot of air pollution.

The principles which can be used in my company are to install a waste water treatment plant in the company to treat the waste water of the 4 companies and then let it into the oceans. The other thing that will help is to use wind and solar power thus using green energy and helping to reduce pollution as much as possible.

·         BaumerElectric

This video describes a Racing real time monitoring system. In the video an electric car is used to display the system. The tires when used get heated up and then expand. The car is programmed to run with specific gear ratios and other parameters. So If the tires expand the gear ratios and all other parameters need to be changed. So this system is attached to the axle between the two tires to measure the distance from the ground and notify if the tires have either been expanded or contracted. If they have been changed the signal is given to the computer embedded in the car and specific changes are made in gear ratios and other parameters.

The TQM concept learnt is process approach and factual approach to decision making. Sustainable and green aspect is that the company produces electric cars thus not using fossil fuels. This helps a lot to reduce pollution.

The concepts which would be useful in my company is to use green energy i.e. use of batteries and minimal use of fossil fuels.

·         Bentley-Quality

This video shows the 2 bentley cars. These are high end cars which are very expensive. The video describes various features of both the cars. The emphasis is made on the quality. As it is a high end car, the quality of the material used is of very high quality. As this car is sold at a very high price, its made with a lot of precision.

The TQM concept learnt is involvement of people, process approach, systems approach to management, continual improvement. People involvement is high. The car is manufactured according of the taste of the user. Continual improvement is carried out in the use of materials inside the car. Sustainable green concept use is the use of leather, wood and metal instead of plastic for making the interiors.

The concepts which can be used in my company are taking customer’s consideration for making the product and using eco-friendly products instead of plastic.

·         BOSH-ESP-ABS

In this video different systems are shown which help the car maintain its stability when it takes sharp turns at high speeds. The systems include anti-lock braking system, electronic stability program and traction control. Out of these methods ABS and ESP are old technologies. Traction control is the newest technology.

In the video all these technologies are displayed using ford and Toyota cars. Out of these technologies traction control is the most effective technology. It is developed after developments in ABS and ESP.

The concepts to be learnt in this video are process approach and continual improvement. The approach was good in the video. They tested the system by first putting the system off and then by putting the system on significant changes were observed.

The concept which can be used in my company is continual development. Traction control method was developed by improvising in ABS and ESP.

·         CarWashProc

This video shows the process through which a car is washed. It is showed that the foam is applied on the car thrice. In the beginning the foam is applied for the first time through pipes on the side of the path of the car. The pipe has perforations and the foam is sprinkled over the complete car through some force so that it is applied properly. Then the car goes through many mobs which are placed in such a manner that the whole car is cleaned. All the foam applied on the car is removed properly. This process is repeated thrice. In the end air is blown over the car to dry it from any water which has been left.

The process approach used is very efficient and effective. As foam is applied thrice to the car, it is cleaned properly. The mobs are placed in strategically so that each and every corner of the car is cleaned using them. The water used in the process if reused it follows Sustainable and Green quality aspect.

The TQM concept learnt that can be used in my company is process approach and quality. The same process is carried out thrice to maintain the quality.

·         Chem-eng-Siemens2

This video shows safety integrated automation for chemical and pharmaceutical plants. It showed a system which had many valves. The striking feature of this plant was that everything was automated. Any function to be performed was just one click away. All the logs were maintained in the computer which could be in turn used for further reference. A matrix was maintained which had all the operations of the valves involved in the system. Any values can be change by just feeding it to the computer. It also uses triggers. We can set a threshold value and ask for a valve to stop functioning if it goes above or below a certain value.

The principle learnt from the video is process approach. Everything is managed so efficiently that an engineer staying miles away can control the machine using a computer.

The principle which can be used in my company is to automate the process as much as possible. Other thing learnt is to maintain logs as much as possible so that it can be useful to check what went wrong if anything goes wrong else it can be used for further research and reference.

·         COGNEX-vision .

It describes a machine vision system for zero defect focused visual factories. It is used to find defects in the part of the machine. It shows how to carry out quality testing and analysis of finished goods. It consists of 4 parts viz. dimensional gauging, defect inspection, robot guidance and identification. It is used to check whether some part is weared out or small. It uses a camera system to detect the length and create sharp images.  Then the image clicked is compared with the reference    image in the computer. All these processes are automated, so the error is almost negligible. It also keeps track by collecting and analyzing.

The principles which can be used in my company are automating the processes and keep track of data for analysis in the future. It should also inculcate the quality of using good methods of testing and analysis.

·         Continental-TEVES-ESP

This video shows the testing of the ESP i.e. electronic stability program installed in cars. This video shows the tests performed on Mercedes, BMW and Ford cars. In the beginning the test was performed on the Mercedes car without the ESP system on and then again the test was repeated with the ESP system on. The car performed better with the ESP system on. This system would help the drivers a lot to avoid accidents and driver the car more easily.

The TQM features are process approach and continual improvement. The process approach was very correct. First they tested the car with the system off and then with the system on. ABS systems are already installed in the cars which perform a similar function. But EPS was installed which is better than ABS which shows continual improvement.

The features that can be used in my company are the approach which is recursive. They had all the data of the car and its speed and other factors well in advance. Thus the preparation for the test was complete. This feature can be used in my company for testing. Extra care was taken for the car while testing. Extra loads where attached to the car so that even if the test failed and something went wrong the car will be in control. This feature can also be very useful in my company.
